Count folds all day: set up the automation
FoldOdometer counts every fold while the app is open, with nothing to set up. To keep counting when it's closed, add one Shortcuts automation. It takes about a minute.
- In FoldOdometer, tap Set Up Automation. You'll find it in onboarding, on the Today screen's upgrade card, or in Settings → Automation Setup. FoldOdometer opens the Shortcuts app.
- In Shortcuts, open the Automation tab and tap +.
- Choose Opened or Closed, then select Is Closed.
- Choose Run Immediately and turn Notify When Run off.
- Add the action Log Duo Fold (search for "FoldOdometer" or "Log Duo Fold"), then tap Done.
- Fold your iPhone Duo once. Back in FoldOdometer, the setup checklist shows Automation connected ✓ as soon as the first fold arrives.
The app shows an animated walkthrough of these steps, or a numbered list if Reduce Motion is on. You can also say "Log a fold in FoldOdometer" to Siri, or run Log Fold in FoldOdometer from Shortcuts.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I need a Shortcuts automation?
iOS only lets an app see the hinge while that app is open on screen. To count folds while FoldOdometer is closed, it uses the "Opened or Closed" automation trigger in Apple's Shortcuts app. That automation runs FoldOdometer's Log Duo Fold action in the background every time you fold your iPhone Duo shut.
The automation is optional. Without it, FoldOdometer still counts every fold while it's open.
Background counting stopped. What should I check?
If the automation hasn't logged a fold for over a day while FoldOdometer still saw you fold, the Today screen shows "Background counting may be off". In Shortcuts → Automation, check that the FoldOdometer automation is still there, is turned on, and is set to Run Immediately. If you deleted and reinstalled FoldOdometer, edit the automation and add Log Duo Fold again.
How are folds counted?
- One fold is one close of the hinge. Each "Is Closed" automation run, each close the app sees, and each "Log Duo Fold" counts once.
- If the app and the automation report the same fold within 2 seconds, it's counted once, so nothing is double-counted.
- Older setups still work: a separate Opened and Closed automation pair, or a Closed-only automation, also counts each fold once.
- A fold belongs to the day it was closed. Weeks start on the first weekday of your region's calendar, and days follow your time zone.
- A streak is the number of consecutive days that reached your daily goal. Today never breaks a streak while it's still in progress.
- You can add a fold by hand with + → Log a Fold Manually on the Today screen.
Why isn't my widget up to date?
FoldOdometer asks iOS to refresh its widgets every time a fold is logged and again at midnight. However, iOS limits how often widgets can refresh to save battery, so on a busy day a widget can lag behind the app for a while. Opening FoldOdometer always shows the exact count, and the widgets catch up on their next refresh.
To change what a widget shows (Today, This Week, This Month, This Year or All Time), touch and hold the widget and choose Edit Widget.
What is demo mode?
Demo mode fills FoldOdometer with realistic sample folds so you can explore the dashboard, charts and goals. On an iPhone without a hinge, tap Try demo data on the Today screen. On any device, use Settings → About → Show demo data.
A "Demo data" banner stays at the top while it's on. Tap Exit demo to leave. Demo data is kept in memory only. It never mixes with your real log, doesn't change your saved goal, and doesn't appear in widgets.
How do I export my data?
Go to Settings → Export and choose Export Raw Events (CSV) for every logged event, or Export Daily Totals (CSV) for one row per day. The share sheet then lets you save the file to Files, AirDrop it or send it to another app.
Does FoldOdometer work on other iPhones?
FoldOdometer counts the hinge of an iPhone Duo running iOS 27.1 or later. On other iPhones there's nothing to count, but you can try the app with demo data.
How do I delete my data?
Use Settings → Delete All Data, or delete the app. All data is stored only on your iPhone. See the Privacy Policy.
